You'll harvest the bounty; we'll tend your garden.
Learn more about homegrown vegetables
Signature Culinary Gardens from Squeaky Green Organics are full-service, 100% organic gardens planted with a mix of heirloom vegetables chosen by you. Your personal Squeaky Green Organics EcoCoach tends your garden, and you harvest the bounty. Intensive relay planting techniques and clever season-extending equipment means you'll harvest three crops a year.
The garden can be planted into a raised bed installed over a patch of lawn or by using a raised planter that rests on your patio, rooftop, deck or balcony. Both raised beds and raised planters are available from Squeaky Green Organics. If you already have a raised bed or raised planter, your Squeaky Green Organics EcoCoach can use it.
Start by making a list of vegetables you enjoy eating. Try to think past the limitations of the local grocery store: Which of these vegetables are difficult to find? Which are cost prohibitive to purchase at the local store? Are the varieties available at the local store tasteless? Consider these reasons: Perhaps these will be vegetables you'll want to grow. Or do certain vegetables conjure fond memories of growing up as a kid? Do you have memories of harvesting green beans with a grandparent? You may wish to share that same joy with a child. Your EcoCoach can help you select vegetables that grow well together and are the right combination of cool season plants (spring and fall) and warm season plants (summer).
You really do not! Even a small 15 inch x 33 inch planter can produce 9 pounds of vegetables. Plus with the Bumper Crop Guarantee, you'll get $25 in free Squeaky Green Organics heirloom vegetables. All you need is a sunny location for the garden. A thriving garden requires at least six hours of direct sun exposure a day.
It costs about as much as buying a season's worth of produce at the farmer's market. Your start-up investment, a raised bed or raised planter, will last for years.
It depends on the type of vegetables you select, the location of your garden (more sun exposure is better), and the weather. The number of plants placed in each square foot depends on the vegetable type and how far apart they should be planted in order to develop properly. For example, bush beans require about four inches between plants, thus nine plants will fill one square foot. Sixteen carrots, spaced three inches apart, can be planted in one square foot. One tomato may require two square feet or more. Our average yield of three crops a year per square foot has been 3.1 pounds. Weather is the uncontrollable variable that most impacts yield. In 2010 the yield was 4.2 pounds per square foot, but it was only 1.3 in 2009.
Our planting approach is based on the square-foot gardening concept. The square-foot gardening concept is simple: Build a raised bed, divide the space into sections of one square-foot each, and plant vegetables in just the amount of space they need. Vegetables like squash and watermelon grow vertically with the help of a trellis.
Most plants are transplanted into your garden as seedlings. Harvested plants are replaced with a seedling that is days from producing. Slow growing plants such as tomatoes and peppers are interplanted with fast growing plants like radish and spinach. The fast growing plants are harvested at the exact time the slow growing plants need more elbow room.
We use special covers and blankets to extend the growing season. Most people in Nebraska can grow vegetables six months of the year. We can extend this by three months (six weeks in spring, six in fall), which translates into a 50% increase in productivity.
We started offering vegetable garden tending services after several friends told us they had a black thumb. They had become frustrated when they had little to show for their summer-long investment of time and supplies. They needed somebody to help turn their black thumbs into a green thumbs. Our objective is to coach you so that after a year or two you'll be a confident, successful organic vegetable gardener. Your EcoCoach can schedule the garden maintenance visits when you are home so that each visit becomes a transfer of knowledge. Investing in Squeaky Green Organics' garden tending service for a year or two could garner significant future payback after you've "learned to fish" on your own.
After crunching the numbers, you'll probably find the vegetables from your Signature Garden tended by Squeaky Green Organics cost about the same as organic produce from the grocery store. But the vegetables from your garden aren't ordinary grocery store varieties. They are heirloom varieties that have been selected for incredible flavor. You may never forgive Squeaky Green Organics for introducing you to luscious heirloom vegetables. That's because no grocery store vegetable will ever taste as good! You'll finally discover how vegetables tasted before plant scientists started breeding vegetables for yield, shelf life and ship-ability at the expense of flavor.
Heirloom refers to a class of vegetables cherished over time by seed-savers who have passed them through the generations. Heirloom vegetables are amazingly flavorful and visually beautiful, so that's all we offer.
We guarantee a bumper crop of delicious, ultra-fresh, nutrient-dense heirloom vegetables. The weather, of course, is beyond our control, but that doesn't stop us from guaranteeing a bumper crop! That's because Squeaky Green Organics has its own certified organic vegetable farm. So if the weather's absolutely terrible, we'll supplement your harvest with some of ours. Twenty-five dollars of any variety of our ultra-fresh, nutrient-dense, organic heirloom vegetables offered at our Farmer's Market store are included when you sign up for the Signature Culinary Garden Tending service. Just stop by our Farmer's Market booth in the Old Market on any Saturday from May 5 to October 13 (8 AM to 12:30 PM). Spend all $25 on 1 day or spread it over multiple visits.
Harvest the bounty, unless you prefer your EcoCoach to do it. We will also ask you to keep an eye on the garden between visits and notify your EcoCoach of any issues.
Absolutely. We use the same organic materials and methods used on the Squeaky Green Organics farm located near Plattsmouth, Nebraska. Some farms use terms like "natural" or "organic" to describe their produce. But only "certified organic" food production is truly organic. It's based on a strict system of farming that mimics natural ecosystems and focuses on feeding the soil so it can feed the plant. Your EcoCoach works with nature to solve problems by promoting soil biological activity. We use minimal off-farm inputs and trust management practices that restore, maintain and enhance ecological harmony. You can find our official USDA "certified organic" certificate at our website - www.squeakygreenorganics.com.
